Typography – what style and size fonts are used?  Why? What do you think the intended effect of using them is?

On the cover of this NME magazine it uses a big bold font. This is because having big fonts, stands out to the audience more and it makes the text and information more visible compared to other smaller text. Also having larger text on the main story shows that the band included in the main story is important as the story is based around them and what they’re doing. The intended effect is to stick out to the audience and make it look significant. The style of font is an easy to understandable font as it is easy to understand and it is easy to read.
On the cover of the Q magazine it uses a range of styles of fonts and sizes. The cover uses large fonts to project the more important contents and it also uses the smaller font sizes to show the less important content. Its intended use is to separate the content in order to show what the main story is and to show what the other stories are.

The larger font size is used on the bands on the page, this has been used so it shows the audience who the bands are, and it gives each band some sort of importance. The style of font is a simple font as it’s understandable and simple to read.
On the Mojo there are different fonts and font sizes. The large texts are to show the main stories in the magazine.

The smaller texts are used to show the less important articles. The secondary lead has been made bold so that it stands out amongst the picture and the other text on the cover. Also it has a simple font so that it allows the audience to read it without difficulty.

The smaller text has been made bold but small as it is the sidebar.

The intended effect of this is to make the audience understand what articles are the main and what the sub articles are.

Layout – Where have key items been placed? Why have they been put there? What’s the effect of putting them there?

The way the NME magazine has its layout is similar in most NME magazines. The important content is always larger (this is in all conventional magazines) the other content is always smaller as it shows that it’s not as important but important enough to be on the cover. The text in which shows which bands are in the magazine is below the face of the character in the picture. This is because the company want to express the importance of the character, this sense of importance can also been taken from the pose in which the character is showing. Also the character has been placed in a position which shows his head overlap the masthead. This gives off the effect that the character has more authority over the company.
The way the cover of Q is set out is in a way to show which the main story is and what the other stories are.  For example the main story for this version of Q is about Robbie Williams so they’ve placed it in the middle of the page along with the large picture of Robbie. It also contains the other stories. These are made smaller as the company wants to make the main story stand out more. (like exiting conventional magazine)

The picture is made to be the largest detail on the page; this is because the company wants to let the audience know who he is and what he looks like, if they didn’t know. His head overlaps the Q logo, this shows that the company wants to make Robbie stand out even more and the company wants to give him all the attention.
The way the Mojo magazine is set out is in a way that makes everything visible to the audience and in a way that allows the audience to understand which article is the main and which are the sub articles.

The picture is the biggest thing on there as it is the main article and the company want to show the importance of the character in the picture.

He shows a sense of importance by the way his hand overlaps his name. His head also overlaps the title of the magazine, this shows that the company want to give all the attention to him.
Language – what type of language is used? Why? How are the audience addressed? What’s the intended effect of addressing them this way?

The language used on the cover is language that fits in with the specific group of people who read it, this is because it suites the language that the specific group of people use. The intended effect of addressing the audience with this sort of language is to make the audience feel more relatable to the magazine.
The language on the cover is language that fits into a specific group. The company do this as they won’t the magazine to feel like it can relate to the audience, feel like the magazine speaks to the audience by including certain slang words such as ‘cos’ instead of because.  On the cover it includes certain topics that a formal magazine wouldn’t use such as ‘drug’ related talk.

The intended effect is making the audience feel like the magazine is more relate able.
The language used on the cover is informal as the magazine includes ‘drug’ related talk ‘acid trips’.

The cover also uses certain content that the older audience would understand such as content that involves old bands or artists. For example artists such as Iggy Pop or bands such as The Smiths. This sort of content and language would mainly appeal to people who’re older.

The intended use of this is to appeal to an older age group rather than appealing to everyone. It makes the audience relate to it more due to the age its intended for.
Colour – what effect does the colour have?  What is the symbolism of the colour used? What’s the intended effect on the audience of the colour scheme?

The magazine has used a range of colours on its cover. The effect that the colours have is that it gives the magazine excitement and it gives the magazine change. This makes the magazine different every time it’s out; this is good as it would cause it to be more interesting every time it’s bought. The intended effect on the audience of the colour scheme is that if it looks different every time, the audience are more likely to buy it as it shows that the company don’t use the same ideas all the time.
The colours used on the cover are neutral colours. Neutral colour means that the colours don’t stick out too much. The colours all link in with the picture as well, the red jumper links in with the logo and the white background links in with the ‘Q’, the text boxes and speech bubbles. The grey links to the text box at the top and the text which says ‘ROBBIE’.

The intended effect on the audience of the colour scheme is that it all links together. The picture doesn’t stand out too much due to the mixing of the colours.
The colour used on the range from light to dark.

The background colour is lighter as it makes Johnny stand out more; this is good as he is the main article in the magazine.

The text colour is a mix between red and white. These colours are used as they stand out above the background colour due to how they’re lighter than the background.

The intended effect on the audience of the colour scheme as is to gives the magazine cover variety compared to magazines that use the same colour scheme.
Camerawork – in the images, what shot types and angles have been used?  Why? What’s the intended effect on the audience?

On the cover a medium close up has been used. Using this type of shot allows the audience to see not only the action on the face of the character, but the audience are allowed to see the action that the character is doing with his hands or arms. On the NME cover its shows that the character is looking forward towards the audience and he is putting his hands together to show that he is maybe going to break out into a speech. The intended effect of this camera work is to show the importance of the character, to show that the magazine is about him and his band.
On the cover a medium close up has been used. This is to show the action of Robbie. The action can link to the text that is underneath him, it says about him doing drugs and the action shows him covering his mouth as if to say that he’s said a secret out loud. Having this sort of shot also allows the audience to see his facial actions, wide eyes. The intended effect is that it allows the audience to see what his actions are; this allows us to understand that maybe the article would be revealing something secret.
On the cover a medium to long shot has been used. This is because it shows most of the body also it shows the action that Johnny is doing, pointing towards the audience. The effect shot that this creates is that it makes the audience feel like Johnny is pointing towards them, like he is looking at the people who’re reading the magazine.
Mise-en-scene – in the images, what props, costumes, and settings have been used? Why? What’s the intended effect on the audience?
In the smaller images you can see microphones. This shows that the pictures relate to live performances as you can see bright lighting that shine on the artist.
The costume that Robbie seems to be wearing is a bright red jumper; this seems to stand out more due to the white background that has been added. A bright light has been added to the picture as you can see a light gleaming of his forehead; this could link to him as he is looking up at something. The intended effect on the audience is that it allows the audience see what he wear and it allows the audience to see his kind of style relating to clothes.
The costume used on this cover is a suit; this shows that even though he is a rock star, he still dresses smart and respectable. In the background it looks like a lamp is shining, this suggests that the photos were taken in a studio.

The intended effect of this is to allow the audience to see what he looks like.
